Functional things are wonderful things
I read books about everything
Balance sheets and boardroom meets
The ceo's gotta go cuz he's got kids at home
We dream economically
I used to love the feeling of buying a cd
But what does it mean about me?
Remember 94
They opened a flagship store
Spending weekends at the mall
I loved that record store
I professed to hate
Capitalism and the unfree state
Contradictions are great
Never thought about my parents working late
Teen dreams are just packaging
We unwrap to reveal nothing but then we write our stories in, hoping to become something
Friendships are just bonds of sweat
Intangibles we can't forget
Memories are there to remind
About the way we change all the time
And these are just changing times
So say goodbye to that enterprise
They only seemed to charge a fair price
When we all knew they were going to die
Our cultural lives are short
Dog-eared imprints of what we've sold and bought
But those opening chords were divine
Soundtracked me dreaming that I'll make you mine
It's all so hard to define

There were things we thought we'd never say
And they were things we said anyway
Remember how it couldn't last
And in the end it came to pass
Remember how we used to feel the same
I never used to know what to do
Somehow I did it right despite the goofs
And now I know your moves
I guess you know mine too
I used to tingle when it was so new
When I was young I always wanted to be older
and now i'm all grown
I always falter cuz I'm trying to recapture being young
They're closing down on the old avenue
Building a coffee shop with a view
Of all the unchartered paths
The ones I never crossed
Given the chance would I do it again?
We never had to talk about old times
History was short and you could never be mine
There's no eternal flame
And so we shouldn't count the days
Given the chance of course I'd do it again

When I was in school, science didn't capture my imagination
I just found it boring
It was thick black and white textbooks full of technical jargon
Nowadays, being into science is cool
You see all these kids who are proud to be nerds, walking around with backpacks and straight clothes
Their parents encourage it
There's all this propaganda about technology being the future and if you've got a brain for science then you should consider yourself lucky
It's a guarantee of a good job and a life of constant discovery and happiness
When I go to sleep
At night I see
Equations in my head
Like counting sheep
All these mysteries
And our histories
Conspire to conclude
That evangelically science chose me
It's just a total lie
Most scientists spend their time making E numbers and housecleaning products
They're slaves to giant corporations
It's true that I wish I knew how to fix the toaster or self-diagnose when I'm poorly
But I like a little mystery
I choose feel, I choose soul
I follow my gut over data protocol
I choose sight, I choose sound
I want the world, not just its coordinates down

You can fool some of the people all the time
To chase a white whale under Stars and Stripes
I can't see the world through other peoples' eyes
But rags to riches is an ancient nursery rhyme
I'm at the mid point of my life
Can't take it back to a simpler time
From here on in it's slow then precipitous decline
Pax Americana
Well, goodbye
The world is a snake eating its own tail
Peace is hell, the torturers prevail
I remember when my knees first began to fail
Gotta flex your head to see things in a different way
It's not a low point in the history of our time
It's just political paradigm
It's in our gift to try and climb great heights
Pax Americana
Let's not lie
No golden past, we're nowhere near the pinnacle
Don't get nostalgic, it's oh-so-fucking cynical
Not left, not right, I won't align!
Hallucinate in a New World Order
No more Pax Americana
