Scandinavia hit the ten-year milestone, then there was a pandemic, and then Tibor got a new job in Glasgow. Things happen in threes and before you know it you’ve got a black swan on your hands. Ten Years of Scandinavia is that black swan – a thing we thought we’d never have because why would we make a live album? For the first half of our decade we hardly ever played any shows, and then when we started to play more, they weren’t usually the kind of gigs you record for posterity.
The 14 songs on Ten Years of Scandinavia are among our most treasured, meaning they’re ones we all agreed we liked playing live and that audiences told us they liked hearing too.
The songs from Live Style are more or less from our first three albums. We took them on tour to China and the Philippines in 2014. Three of them have identical chord sequences because that was an early conceit – how many different ways can we play the same two or three chords? Quite a few, we’re proud to say.
The songs from Still Live are from our last two albums when we started playing more frequently at the same two bars in New Cross, London. We took them on tour to Holland and Germany in 2017 and 2018. For this, we bought a black box to play all the keyboard, brass, and string parts live with us.
Ten Years of Scandinavia was conceived, written, arranged, performed, and produced by Scandinavia, with the exception of the canned American audience we got from the Internet.
Recorded at Blue Studios in Dalston, London on September 26, 2020. Mixed and mastered by Scandinavia at Good Living Mobile Studios.
Scandinavia are Amin, Tibor, Tom, and Warrick.
Honorary mentions to our alumni: Nadim, Miriam, and Tim in Berlin, Melbourne, and Cornwall respectively for singing along in spirit.
